Okay what you can do is, if you remember their usernames: view friend list (bottom right), add a friend and type their username. OR launch the game, press shift n tab, go to somthing like "friend in game" or "plaers in game" and go to the section where you see all peaple you have played with. So I used to able to join my friends in a steam group server but a couple months ago it always shows up as "Not in joinable game" which is really starting to irritate me. It always says that my friends are "Not in joinable game" but I can join their steam group server (by guessing) through the browser easily. Archived post.
Versus mode is a bit different. Last time I played it there were quite a few hackers and it wasn't really any fun. Good to play with a group of friends, more fun than the campaign IMO, but might be hard to get 7 friends to join up for one at this point.
