In my honest opinion the power difference between the base Golf and the GTI isn't huge (stock for stock). Or at least what I consider to be worth the $5000 price difference. I previously owned a 2.5L '08 Rabbit and my 2014 GTI doesn't seem that big of a difference in straightline acceleration.
